Don't Hang That Dress From a Tree

So this may come as a shock, but I’m just gonna go ahead and say it… A wedding dress looks better on a bride than hanging from a tree. Whew! I’m glad to get that out. Now I know that may ruffle some feathers, but it’s the truth.

Now I’m as guilty as anyone here. We’ve all done it. Most wedding photographers at some point have taken the dress and gone out to photograph it hanging from a tree, the side of a barn, a chandelier, or some other dramatic picturesque scene. The thing is I’m not even sure why.

My Secret Weapon

I was scrolling through a photography Facebook group and saw a post from someone searching for a second photographer. I was floored! It was Wednesday and they were looking for a photographer for a wedding happening in three days!

The thing is, it really shouldn’t be a surprise, because I see it all the time. Just about every week there’s a new post, looking for a second shooter for the weekend.

I get it! Things happen and sometimes you have to scramble to find a replacement, but it feels like this is happening way too often.

Just a few years ago most wedding photographers worked alone, but then there was a change and more husband and wife photography teams appeared. Now, it’s kinda expected to have two photographers for every wedding.

Wedding Traditions

My family loves Halloween! Of course, what 5 year old doesn’t enjoy putting on a superhero costume and collecting handfuls of candy? My wife loves prepping for Halloween- she stocks up on candy and gets great joy handing it all out to trick-or-treaters. Me? I love horror movies. It’s pretty much a must for me to watch the classic Halloween movie on Halloween. It’s the one day when it’s ok to pretend to be someone else as you stuff yourself with candy.

Isn’t it funny how we come to celebrate or hold on to certain traditions. Halloween for instance is largely based on the Celtic Pagan celebration of Samhain, where they would dress in costume and give out treats to ward off and appease spirits.

This got me thinking about weddings and some of the many traditions that we still cling to today.

Be Present and Experience Life

As guests entered the wedding, a sign requesting they turn off cell phones, cameras, and other devices welcomed them to the unplugged ceremony. When the bride made her grand entrance, all of the guests stood up and cell phones came out from every corner. As she made her way down the aisle, two guests stepped to the center behind her for a better shot, temporarily blocking my view as well as the videographer’s.

Every so often, I see posts and blogs from wedding photographers about how inconsiderate guests can be at weddings. One went viral not too long ago and was all over social media. However, I learned long ago that this has simply become part of the modern times, and it’s my job as a professional to honestly document events as they happen. Sometimes that may even mean a few photos have cell phones in them.

As Your Photographer You've Got a Friend in Me

There I was sitting in the dark fighting back the emotions, just hoping my wife wouldn’t turn and notice the stream of tears in the glow from the movie screen. Yeah, I’m man enough to admit that I cried during the ending of a recent movie. Disney movies have a tendency to do that to folks...right?

Toy Story 4 was another fun adventure for the characters we’ve grown to love. It highlighted many wonderful traits, such as integrity, compasion, friendship, loyalty, and love- traits which the Toy Story franchise is known for.
